MO’s Smooth Road Plan Keeps Crews Rolling →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Missourians saw more road construction this year — in fact, more than ever before in the state’s history. Crews are working to produce smoother roads in the state — approximately 2,200 mi. of them for starters. The flurry of work came after voters passed Amendment 3 in November 2004 giving the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) the green light for major road repairs. AZ Contractor Completes Emergency Repairs on I-40 →

From Construction Equipment Guide... This past spring, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) issued a challenge to local highway contractors. The challenge, in the form of a project, was that a 12-mi. (9.3 km) stretch of I-40, between Sanders, AZ, and the New Mexico state line, was in dire need of repair and ADOT wanted the highway's conditions improved before winter temperatures would render pouring asphalt impossible. ADOT put out an emergency bid on May 26 and Southwest Asphalt Paving, a subsidiary of Fisher Industries located in Tempe, AZ, accepted the challenge by winning the bid on June 17.  Click for more...

From Construction Equipment Guide... Kawasaki has made a lasting impression on Barrett Paving Materials’ Litchfield, NY, facility. Barrett Paving owns a year 2000 Kawasaki 95ZIV, a 6.5- yd. (5.9 m) machine and has put a startling number of hours on it. According to Robert Bard, Barrett’s Litchfield plant superintendent, “[We] have had tremendous success with the Kawasaki loader. Before work could begin on the construction aspects of a $6 million capital improvement plan at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, SC, the old Brasington Grandstand in Turn 2 had to go. For two weeks this fall, a 15-member crew from Total Demolition in Hartsville, SC, leading with a Caterpillar 330 excavator with a Genesis XP shear, crunched away the old 3,000-seat grandstand. JCB has been awarded a contract, expected to be worth up to $140 million, to supply the U.S. Army with a high-speed backhoe loaders for military engineering tasks. The high mobility engineer excavator (HMEE) vehicle has been designed to meet the requirements specified by U.S. Army TACOM for a backhoe loader capable of speeds up to 57 mph. The award of the contract by TACOM, the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, follows a three-year program of design, development and testing to produce a military machine to meet stringent performance criteria.  Click for more...

Workers combat excavation of dense Triassic rock along the developing Interstate 540 — the outer loop of the Raleigh, NC, beltway — in addition to settlement issues associated with the use of this type of rock as fill. Lane Construction Corporation began work in April 2004 on two adjoining I-540 projects located in northwest Raleigh that total 5 mi. of new road construction. While it was never one of the seven greatest man-made wonders of the world, at least the building at 926 Haddonfield Rd. is no longer one of the seven greatest man-made eyesores of Cherry Hill, NJ. The abandoned building on the 1.8-acre (.72 ha) tract was an unflattering complement to the ghostly shell of the 223-acre (90.2 ha) former Garden State Park horse race track directly across the street. Permitting Questions Remain at Spanish Fort Town Center →

Despite two tropical storms, a hurricane and a group seeking to stop the project, site preparation work on the roughly $100 million Spanish Fort Town Center project is proceeding on schedule, according to the developer. Work started June 20 on the giant retail complex, which will be anchored by a Bass Pro Shops and JC Penney and include stores, restaurants, a hotel, office buildings and car dealerships, said John Farrow, senior project manager for Cypress Equities, the retail development and acquisition affiliate of Dallas-based Staubach Retail.  Click for more...

An improved piece of iron made its national debut this spring at the U.S. 74 highway project in Robeson County, NC. According to Terry Moore, of R.W. Moore Equipment Company, headquartered in Raleigh, NC, the John Deere 210 rubber-tired excavator was selected for this project because of the large job site and the machine’s ability to set jersey barriers and pipes and dig trenches. “The 210 requires less maintenance, is more efficient and compact, and can do more operations than [our previous machines],” Moore said.  Click for more...

A total of 26,000 graves are being added to the current 215,000 graves at the 200-acre Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. The expansion is necessary to accommodate the large number of veterans from World War II.
