From Construction Equipment Guide... A Dec. 15 rock and mud slide damaged a portion of a North Carolina roadway known for its scenic vistas. Debris toppled onto the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 401, which is mid-way between the French Broad River and Mt. Pisgah in Buncombe County, NC. According to Jeff Bradley, project manager of Taylor & Murphy Construction Co. Inc., in Asheville, NC, repair work began in early February. Taylor & Murphy is the general contractor that will handle all of the repair work with the exception of the paving, which will be subcontracted to APAC-Atlantic’s Asheville division. Despite receiving 5 in. of rain between Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, Yates Construction of Biloxi, MS, is running on schedule in the development of the Fallen Oak golf course, located approximately 20 miles north of Biloxi near the DeSoto National Forest on Mississippi Route 15. While the extreme weather halted portions of the operation and left key pieces of equipment temporarily idle, Tommy Shook, Yates’ project manager, said the overall timetable for a February 2006 completion has not been adversely affected. The Western Gateway Project in Rochester, upstate New York, is an ambitious $85-million effort to rebuild Route I-490 from a western suburban stretch of the Erie Canal to the Genesee River in downtown Rochester. During the job, bridges over the highway will be rebuilt, noise barriers constructed, vehicle monitoring and traffic condition announcement equipment installed and landscaping improved. Volvo Construction Equipment North America has been awarded contracts totaling approximately $30 million by the United States government to build and deliver more than 200 units of construction equipment to the Iraqi government to be used in the reconstruction of that country. The contracts, awarded on behalf of the Iraqi government by the United States’ Department of State, are funded by a $21 billion reconstruction allocation from the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense and for the Reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan, 2004, passed by the United States Congress in 2003.
