Noad Construction Inc., of the neighboring town of Litchfield. This busy intersection used to be the location of the nationally recognized Candlewood Playhouse, Grand Union and approximately six small retail and service establishments. As the businesses and cultural center faltered and closed, the buildings were boarded up and marked for “no trespassing.” With the continued expansion of Fairfield County, the position of this vacant land became all the more viable for a prosperous retail center. The Kenco Group, based in Chattanooga, TN, and operating in excess of 15 million sq. ft. of warehouse space in 19 states and Canada, has expanded in Wauhatchie, TN. The $23-million project, which straddles the state line of Georgia includes a 688,000-sq.-ft. $12-million warehouse that will store cereal. It has been designed with room for future expansion up to a million sq. ft. General Mills moved in as tenant in February. As owner/developer, Kenco will play a role in economic development, and likely receive some leeway on property taxes. Checkered Flag Equipment Sales and Transport Inc. of Thornburg, VA, has taken on the full Terex line of mostly large earthmoving equipment. The used equipment dealer became a qualified Terex dealer, specifically serving the Virginia area, in late September 2002. A month earlier, the company took up residence in its new $2-million facility. Motorists will have a much smoother ride on Interstate 20 when the Southern Roadbuilders Division of APAC-Georgia Inc. completes a $15.3-million reconditioning project in Columbia and McDuffie counties. “Interstate 20 was built in the early 1960s, and the highway had begun to show signs of significant wear,” said Brian Hall, project manager of APAC-Georgia. “As water seeped into the subgrade through the years, the subgrade had softened up, causing the concrete roadway surface to crack under the weight of traffic.” The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) had repaired several sections of the roadway through the years. Villager Construction Tackles Route 31 Challenges in NY →
In Palmyra, NY, on Route 31 a project has been under way to reconstruct a 1.9-mi. (3.1 km) section of the town from the Macedon town line in the west to the bridge which spans the Erie Canal in the east. The $7.5-million project includes installing a new water main as well as new storm and sewer lines. While mostly a tractor show, industrial machinery also was on display along with engines and toys. The show drew a large crowd to this Northern Illinois town known for the Sandwich engines it once produced. Inc. decided to purchase a wheel loader for its sawmill operations, the company wasn’t looking for something “run-of-the-mill;” the Lexington, NC-based business needed a rugged machine that would help it move thousands of pounds of timber, bark and mulch daily with little downtime. According to Jimmy Kepley, owner and president of the 42-year-old sawmill and wholesale lumber company, he tried out all the major manufacturers of wheel loaders, but one machine impressed him the most: a Kawasaki 80Z IV. “The hydraulic system really stood out and it’s extremely operator-friendly,” said Kepley. Erie Becomes Transportation Mecca With New $8M Hub →
From Construction Equipment Guide... An Intermodal Transportation Complex soon will open its doors for travelers in Erie, PA. Managed by the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, the bayfront building will serve as a hub for passengers of Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority buses and eventually Greyhound buses. In addition, the complex will feature services for taxicabs, cruise boats, ferryboats and even bicycles.
