The low-powered, two-wheel-drive Fords in blue and gray were a common sight on small farms as well as on large ones. The era of the huge four-wheel-drive tractors was still a few years away, with many marketplaces just moving beyond domination by International Harvester model-M tractors and two-cylinder “Johnny Pop” John Deere units. Motorists will have a much smoother ride on Interstate 20 when the Southern Roadbuilders Division of APAC-Georgia Inc. completes a $15.3-million reconditioning project in Columbia and McDuffie counties. “Interstate 20 was built in the early 1960s, and the highway had begun to show signs of significant wear,” said Brian Hall, project manager of APAC-Georgia. “As water seeped into the subgrade through the years, the subgrade had softened up, causing the concrete roadway surface to crack under the weight of traffic.” The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) had repaired several sections of the roadway through the years.  Click for more...

U.S. Aluminum Processor Enhances Productivity With Mustang Skid Steers →

Operating some of the largest aluminum-processing facilities in the mid-southern United States, Tennessee Aluminum Processors Inc., has found the key to productivity—skid steer loaders. Villager Construction Tackles Route 31 Challenges in NY →

In Palmyra, NY, on Route 31 a project has been under way to reconstruct a 1.9-mi. (3.1 km) section of the town from the Macedon town line in the west to the bridge which spans the Erie Canal in the east. The $7.5-million project includes installing a new water main as well as new storm and sewer lines. While mostly a tractor show, industrial machinery also was on display along with engines and toys. The show drew a large crowd to this Northern Illinois town known for the Sandwich engines it once produced. One rather unusual piece of equipment on display was Paul Furar’s 1930 Toro Junior 13-30 truck. Inc. decided to purchase a wheel loader for its sawmill operations, the company wasn’t looking for something “run-of-the-mill;” the Lexington, NC-based business needed a rugged machine that would help it move thousands of pounds of timber, bark and mulch daily with little downtime. Managed by the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, the bayfront building will serve as a hub for passengers of Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority buses and eventually Greyhound buses. In addition, the complex will feature services for taxicabs, cruise boats, ferryboats and even bicycles. In the agreement, Cleveland Brothers will help McCarthy Tire to sell Caterpillar skid steer tires to end users in the dealer’s 32-county area. When Kawasaki recently unveiled its new 95ZV loader, two central New York aggregate producers were quick to be the first on their block to own one. W.F. Saunders and Son Inc., of Marcellus, NY, recently purchased a Kawasaki 95ZV from Tracey Road Equipment. Komatsu Opens $20M Backhoe Plant →

From Construction Equipment Guide... Komatsu America Corporation (KAC), held the grand opening of its Newberry Manufacturing Operation (NMO) in Newberry, SC, on May 29, 2002. The $20-million facility is the new home for production of four Komatsu backhoe loaders including the WB140-2N, WB140PS, WB150-2N and the WB150PS. Located 35 mi. northwest of Columbia, SC, the NMO facility is set on 80 acres (32 ha).
